Kishori Shakti Project

Women will work out their destinies — much better, too, than men can ever do for them – Swami Vivekanand

Objective of the project:
To provide
  • A secured place to study as well as to learn number of activities
  • A counseling centre
  • A shelter to play
  • A elder sister or a guide to talk with or to open up with
  • A activity center to learn life skills
  • A health care center
  • A guidance center for entrepreneurship development
Method of conduction of the program:
  • Each center of Kishori Shakti is coordinated by a Sanghatika.
  • A basic module of activities is provided to the Kishori Shakti Project Sanghatika.
  • The Sanghatika are trained twice a year. The training includes day to day activities as well as new learning.
  • Daily 3 hours class will be conducted as per the schedule.
  • The activities are modified as per the requirement of the slum.

Initially we have decided to work at seven slums on pilot basis. After internal evaluation of these seven places, we have decided to grow the same activities in 3 more slums. Now in 10 slums Kishori Shakti Centers are operated daily 3 hours.

Activities conducted:
  • Monthly schedule of activities is provided to each Kishori Shakti Sanghatika.
  • Daily 1 hour for playing indoor as well as outdoor games. This helps them to channelize their energy towards positive changes.
  • For school going girls, daily revision classes are conducted to guide them to solve their problems faced by them.
  • Conduction of various activities according to the schedule.
  • Other activities are conducted occasionally.
  • Training of all these Sanghatika is conducted twice a year.

In order to look after and raise health awareness among adolescent girls forced into early marriage and motherhood by their parents’ poverty and illiteracy, Niramay runs day care centres for such girls and counsels them.

While ensuring that girls do not get married before the age of 18, the programme also supports their education by providing school kits, curricular and career guidance, vocational training, and life skills training in areas ranging from leadership, motivation, value education, and entrepreneurship development, to positive behaviour, healthcare, cleanliness and hygienic habits.

A dedicated Kishori Shakti Sanghatika (community coordinator) is assigned to each centre.

A total of 23 Kishori Shakti centres are conducted in 23 different slums in Pune benefiting more than 3,000 girls.
